ISO
14000 Standards Family
The
whole world is wakening to the need to control commerce in order that our
fragile environment can be preserved. The
objective of managing an organisation’s operation from an environmental
perspective is to maintain or improve production while continually improving
environmental performance. ISO
14001 makes good business sense as well as good environment sense.
There is a comparison with ISO 9000, the quality standard. ISO 9000 is based on
the contract with the customer. You
can negotiate the required quality with the customer.
Any shortfall in the quality of product or service can be rectified by
agreement with the customer. With
ISO 14001, there is only one contract – with the environment.
You cannot afford to breach that contract.
The successful design and implementation of an EMS
requires:
Increased
confidence that the organisation complies with relevant environmental
legislation and regulations.
Reduced
likelihood of an environmental incident.
Improved
relations with interested parties.
The
promotion of a reputation in the market place through customer reliance.
Communications
are improved throughout the organisation
The
promotion of efficiency and cost effectiveness *
Production
of written procedures that define authority, responsibility, interfaces and
working practices *
Provision
of a documented system that controls the environmental impact of the
activity.
Provision
of a system which ensures that all nonconformities /errors/deficiencies /complaints
are immediately identified, controlled and dealt with through feedback loops
*
Motivation
of staff towards a pride in carrying out their job in an environmentally
friendly manner.
The
promotion of improved industrial relations through interdepartmental
co-operation and input. If everyone knows what is happening and its effect
on the environment they will respond much better *
Controls
are applied to all activity / service / product changes to ensure
environmental considerations are considered and if they are required, agreed
and correctly implemented *
Activity
/ service / product environmental performance data is provided through
feedback analysis *
Training
needs are identified and controlled *
Historical
records are produced which confirm the levels of environmental performance
and system effectiveness. *
Information
for new employee induction is available
*
Those items so marked are cost relative and,
if quantified, can show cost reductions once the system is running efficiently.
